Watching people in a politics thread fall back on the comforting image of a pendulum swinging back and forth over time.

Sadly, this image is misleading garbage. It may be accurate for the balance between the parties, but the history of the GOP these last decades has been a series of points-of-no-return.

If I’d told you, upon the election of HW Bush that he would be the moral high-water mark of the Republican Party going forward, you would not have believed me. And then, again, for Gingrich, Dubya, the Tea party wave… most folks would assume “these are aberrations around a mean for the GOP. They’ll correct away from these excesses.” Only they haven’t. They set the new baseline and reach for a new excess.

I predict that we will never again see a GOP president as competent and morally centered as Trump. He is the party’s new high-water mark.

How reassuring does the image of a pendulum swinging back and forth seem now?

  1. The police murdering folks in the street to advance white supremacy and children being disappeared as an “extreme” to be “waited through” is like saying you only like genocide as a ‘sometimes food’.
