I know that Unkie Harlan has not been very popular since the Connie Willis debacle (for which he is entirely to blame, no doubt), but I will miss him dearly. Ellison was one of the first writers that I genuinely got into โ€” I was reading Deathbird Stories when I was in junior high. His crankiness aside, I honestly consider him to be one of the great American writers; I would put him up in the pantheon with Twain, Faulkner, Steinbeck… any of them.
