Tonight’s family movie was The Emperor’s New Groove.
Dave Turner Really? This felt hopelessly mediocre to me. That said, Patrick Warburton and Eartha Kitt were a hoot. I’ve never seen Kitt in a role like this.

I don’t think I’ve seen this one.
The visual gags make it for me. There’s so much going on on how the backgrounds are designed and how they frame the action! But maybe that’s just me.

I can’t explain why you have no soul. It’s a mystery.
“hopelessly mediocre”
Yes!
Also “relentlessly disappointing”
I love this movie. I think David Spade and John Goodman have good chemistry. And of course Warburton and Kitt are awesome. It’s visually beautiful, too.
Damn it, why can’t I -1 Ralph’s comment?
I don’t know why I clicked through to that Wikipedia article tbh, but the story behind this production is fascinating.
Dave Turner it was pushed out by all of my good taste.
It’s definitely one of my favorites.
whyyy did I get +ed for this?
Bret Gillan Sorry. I think I meant to tag Nathan and brain-farted.
I suspect ENG might be one of those movies inextricably bound to its release date. Cause in the movie theater, you went to see a Disney movie but the main character was voiced by David Spade so you were expecting something a little unlike Disney’s current track record but then you got this really kooky joyride that repeatedly defies expectations.
But absent that time and place, I don’t think those expectations are so strongly established and so the defiance of them is less satisfying.
I recently showed my 9yo music videos of the Spice Girls for the first time and she was totally underwhelmed. What I remember as an explosion of color and lights and glitter is, by today’s standards, incredibly muted. But when the Spice Girls hit the scene, everything was gritty grunge so by comparison they were fresh and bright and sparkly. I think it’s a similar situation.

Josh Roby That makes a ton of sense.
