  1. I suspect ENG might be one of those movies inextricably bound to its release date. Cause in the movie theater, you went to see a Disney movie but the main character was voiced by David Spade so you were expecting something a little unlike Disney’s current track record but then you got this really kooky joyride that repeatedly defies expectations.

    But absent that time and place, I don’t think those expectations are so strongly established and so the defiance of them is less satisfying.

    I recently showed my 9yo music videos of the Spice Girls for the first time and she was totally underwhelmed. What I remember as an explosion of color and lights and glitter is, by today’s standards, incredibly muted. But when the Spice Girls hit the scene, everything was gritty grunge so by comparison they were fresh and bright and sparkly. I think it’s a similar situation.
