luke crane posted this EIGHT PAGE character folio for Burning Wheel to Reddit last night and it is glorious. I look forward to someday playing in a campaign that will result in a well-worn, dog-eared copy of one of these.

An 8 page character sheet feels like a joke. Is this for real? It’s not some “13 pages of backstory” thing, is it?
I used to make form-fillable PDF versions of the BW sheets, and a tiny part of me is itching to do that with this (but I will not).

Aaron Griffin It’s for real, and it’s wonderful. A whole sheet for tracking Beliefs, another for Instincts, Relationships, etc. Every major subject gets a page that lets you comfortably track advancement, evolution, and Artha expenditure.
And it’s not as cramped-tiny as the regular sheet.
Amusingly, there is actually not a single box or field called “Background”: what’s relevant is reflected by specific mechanics, what’s not, has no place on the character sheet 😀
Just in time for my BW Roden game!!
One of the reasons I’m not a big fan of most BW character sheets is that the “sometimes things” eat up too much space on the sheet next to the “all the times things”.
For example, you do need to track which things you spend Artha on – but since you don’t spend Artha all the time, it makes more sense to put that on it’s own sheet than next to each stat/skill.
In this case, this sheet has both that (artha next to each thing), plus puts things you’ll want to look at together (skills, stats, combat stats) on different sheets. I mean, I guess it works fine if everyone is going to spread out 3 sheets on a tablet, but it feels impractical for many game set ups.
Shots fired

While you will need the full eight pages to get started, the “character folio” is designed to be modular. You fill up a page and add a second or third. With our Orphans campaign characters (for whom this was designed), most of them added second sheets for relationships and skills being learned/practice.
As Judd noted, it’s meant to preserve history. Running a multi-decade campaign, I”ve found that player documentation is vital. The player created documents and notes that I have add the necessary (collaborative) perspective to the history of the campaign. I hope these sheets facilitate that. Get started playing BW now and shit will be getting hot when you retire!
Nice. thanks for sharing. I too need to get into another BW campaign. Was really enjoying the one you were running a few years back.
