Do you prefer playing RPGs set in existing settings or media properties, or do you prefer to create your own, either whole cloth or by filing off serial numbers? Or does it not matter to you, as long as the concept seems compelling?

Usually a table created setting works best for me. Because then I know the other players have buy in to the ideas, compared to a setting I make by myself. BitD though has threaded the needle I think. Being a setting that a table can elaborate on but also having enough concrete details that most people find compelling.
I don’t think I’d play in any published world as-is. Even Star Wars I pick and choose my personal canon.
I’m too lazy to keep track of any “official” setting that takes more than a page or two to explain. And it’s more fun to develop my own ideas than study someone else’s
I think i’d say other people’s worlds. My preference is for the rules to inform the setting. Otherwise I’d be looking for good rules to help me build my own setting that worked with the game.
