  1. Thanks for sharing this. Yes, as you can tell, it’s already been rattling around my mind for some time. I suppose you can trace it to Chainmail. But Chainmail, as far as I can tell, put forth a system for simulating miniatures battles for different historical time periods, which is of course fine. But Gygax/Areneson decided to glom it all together for their fantasy game. And it would get even more out of hand with AD&D. Gygax, the supposedly meticulous amateur historian, was responsible for misleading entire generations. πŸ™‚

  2. Oakes Spalding I suppose it’s possible that different-yey-concurrent cultures would have different armor tech, e.g., a Roman legionnaire facing off against a Gaul, though I dunno if that would mean as great a variance in armor types as you see in D&D.
