Remember, before you played WoD, when you played an RPG, you went on an adventure, you killed a dragon, you hit repeat, you were a nerd for doing it.

WoD changed all that. When you played WoD, you had to know the difference between normal and aggravated damage, spend an hour on a fight, and get railroaded in the name of story.

Oh, wait, sorry, not that, the good bits.

  1. < ![CDATA[I am a bit fascinated by the idea that everything before WoD was a mindless dungeon crawl. Also, Vampire players apparently invented teenagers having sex. Which comes as a bit of a surprise.]]>

  2. Oh, I actually kinda meant the opposite with Underworld.

Because overstated as the point may have been (see Blade, Rice, Emma Bull, Jonsson and Petersén, Ars Magica and 1billion other games, etc.), the Underworld scene cracked me up because of the actual legal actions taken around the whole issue. OMG, the flame wars we raged as actual judges had to read a bunch of nerd-vampire stuff about who came up with the idea of vampires wearing latex.

Like, it’s such a blend of things that were settled out of court and things that were settled out of the court of public opinion.

That’s the new ‘lead storyteller’, Martin Ericsson. The guy responsible for the tabletop business and artistic decisions for Nu-WW. (Which I am pronouncing New-Woo in my head.)

He’s, well, he’s, um, you know how embarrassingly edgy some of us tried to be at eighteen or nineteen? Dude apparently lives there. But has turned it into a career, which is, in a way, inspiring. For certain values of the word.

But yeah, Edgelord Beardsturm there is the dude who is boldly charging back into the worst of the 90s.

  6. Man, I hate to say this right into the headwind of eye-rolling, but ca. 1994 Vampire absolutely was mind-blowing for me and totally did introduce me to a different type of gamer (and to the goth club scene, even).

  8. Finally watched the trailer. It gave me flashbacks to high school. I remember the guy in my electronics class who was in love with all things goth. He used to try to convince me that he “really was a vampire, like for real.”

  10. < ![CDATA[Mark Delsing I imagine people could debate that all day long if they wanted to. The players? Rich at Onyx Path? No body because the past is gone and people need to grow up? IDK.]]>
