I recently bought the new release of XTC’s Skylarking on Blu-Ray and it seems like it’s going to be a herculean effort to do anything other than literally sit in front of my TV while it plays on my Blu-Ray player.

Yep, right with you.
It seems like Mac doesn’t like Blu-Ray even though the SuperDrive is supposed to play it.
Matt Widmann The Apple SuperDrives have never supported Blu-Ray. Jobs himself said Apple wasn’t going anywhere near the licensing mess of the format.
Really?!? That would explain it.

To be fair, it’s a huge pain in the ass on Windows, too
I found most blu-ray players to be pretty crap on mac, too. I’ve found that the best method for me is to rip the bluray with makemkv and handbrake and just watch that. Downside is that the files are huge.
Michael Sands I don’t know that I am ever going to bother ripping Blu-Ray movies; I have so few discs and watch films so rarely these days that it’s not worth the bother.
But I have two or three audio discs now and would really like the get the files on my devices for listening.
Mark Delsing I guess the ripping would work just as well for audio, but I have never tried it.
Michael Sands I need to research it more, but it seems like a big PITA.
MakeMKV is unfortunately the best way to go.
