I’m seeing a lot of people talking about how “we will resist” and “we will keep fighting” and how This Great Tragedy™ is an opportunity to clearly see what work needs to be done. And I get it, I do.

But I have a toddler. My wife and I both have to work to keep a roof over his head, to save for his future. I barely have time to do anything other than care for him and work my job. I barely have time to care enough for myself and my own health issues.

So… this all seems daunting. I just want to raise my son. I don’t feel like I have a lot left to do anything beyond that.

  1. You do what you can when you can, and if that is just raising your son to be the better person we need, then so be it.

If all you can manage is the occasional, “Hey, dude. Not cool,” from time to time, then so be it.

Sometimes just knowing they’re being watched by people who do not approve, is enough to make the bigots think twice.

  3. “Be the change you want to see” sometimes simply means living in defiance of what the regressives want. It means being the good person you are, not turning a blind eye. You don’t need to actively seek fights, but you can stand as an example of what is good and just.

You raise that kid to be a good person like yourself. We all need more good people.

  5. I worry about raising my daughter here, too. The utter crap she is going to be exposed to and of course the many comments she’ll receive about how well she passes for white considering she’s only a quarter black. But it’s hard for me to imagine that anywhere else will be better. People talk about Canada, but they appear to have problems with their Aboriginal population that may be worse than America with it’s black population, and they are statistically less diverse up there.

So I remain here. My family remains here. We fight the good fight by being the best damn people we can be. We stand up for what we believe in and educate those who are willing to listen. We lead by example.

If you think about it, it’s emotionally and psychically exhausting work. But you’re a good person. You’re equipped for it. You care. That’s what we need right now.

Yes, I think about this, too. Even when I was dead-set on moving to Portland, I had to remind myself that it’s also one of the whitest cities in America, not to mention an area that was (maybe still is) a white supremacist stronghold.

    Great post, BTW.
