I finally saw the movie! It was really good! I don’t know that I have anything more insightful to add at this point.

Except: halfway through the film I realized that 3-D is the reason most of the dog fights happen in atmo. That’s my cynical suspicion at least.

Also: that scene early on were Rey slides down a dune on a piece of scrap? More fun than all the pod racing in the first prequel.

  1. I really liked the 3D most of the time, whatever the reason. There were only a couple moments where I found the 3D, or maybe the Imax format, made it a little hard to follow what was going on.

That TIE-Falcon chase tho. Holy wow.

  2. I’m glad you liked it. I didn’t notice the 3D too much, really.

Dogfights in atmosphere allow for shifting perspective of things we understand to convey speed. They’ve been doing it since before 3D was prevalent.

  3. I’m not sure I noticed the 3D – the only time it really stood out to me was when there’s a full-frame still of a star destroyer, and the tip of it was practically touching my nose. I found that a bit gimmicky, though, partly because the ship looked only about 18′ long.

I suspect that one of the difficulties with 3D is that as things get very far away, they tend to be quite flat. For example, the curtain of stars during the opening text crawl was quite dull in 3D.

So, ironically, to make a star destroyer look huge, the differential between left/right eyes needs to be quite minimal.
