I may have posted this in the past, but the (yet another) mass shooting yesterday in San Bernardino put me in mind of it.
Interest in emigrating: rising.

I remember thinking at the time, “If this doesn’t change something, nothing will,” and being pretty sure nothing would change.
I see the rise in mass shootings as a significant sign of change.
